Youth

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;

it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;

it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions;

it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

 

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,

of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.

This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

 

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

 

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder,

the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living.

 

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer,

 courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

 

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered

with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism,

then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up,

to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

 

 

 

 

젊음/청춘

젊음은 인생의 한 시기가 아니라 마음의 상태이다.

그것은 장밋빛 볼과 붉은 입술도 아니며  나긋나긋한 무릎도 아니다. 

그것은 의지와 멋진 상상력이며 활력이 넘치는 감성이다.

그것은 삶의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선함이다.

 

젊음이란 용기가 비겁함을 누르는 것이고 안이함보다는 모험에 나서는 것이다.

이것은 스무 살 청년보다는 예순 노인에게서 발견되기도 한다.

단지 나이를 먹는다고 늙는 것은 아니다.

이상(理想)을 버릴 때 우리는 늙는다.

 

세월은 피부를 주름지게 하지만

열정을 포기하는 것은 영혼을 주름지게 한다.

걱정과 두려움과 자기 불신은 마음을 꺽고 정신을 죽여 버린다.

 

60살이든 16살이든 누구나의 가슴속엔 경이로움에 끌리는 마음,

미지의 것에 대한 꺼지지 않은 호기심 그리고 삶이란 게임에서 느끼는 기쁨이 있게 마련이다.

 

당신과 내 가슴 한가운데에는 무선전신국이 있다.

그것이 사람들로부터 또는 조물주로부터 아름다움과 희망과 활기 그리고

용기와 힘의 메시지를 수신하는 한, 당신은 젊은것이다.

 

안테나가 내려지고 당신의 정신이

냉소의 눈(雪)과 비관의 얼음으로 뒤덮이게 되면,

20살이라 해도 당신은 늙은 것이다.

 

당신의 안테나가 올라가 있고  낙관의 전파를 수신한다면

80살이라도 당신은 젊음을 가진 채 죽을 수 있는 것이다.
